I can honestly say that our Haiti 1 mission trip in February 2020 was one of the most fulfilling experiences I have ever had in my life. How could it not be? It was a trip to a tropical island with 23 of my closest friends to do three of the things I love to do the most; talk about Jesus, love on orphans, and enjoy the beach. Well, there was also lots and lots and lots of work. The team was made up of an incredible mixture of these amazing college students, a bunch of my closest friends with their lovely daughters, and some of our other wonderful girlfriends. Our team was lead by my beautiful daughter Hannah and of course the incredible Matt Perry from Schools for Haiti.
This trip was so much more than just planting gardens and teaching a generation of children a new skill, though. On this trip, we threw a big birthday party for the children at Makencia's providing them with presents, games, toys, cake and even a pinata. We visited 3 different schools and hosted a VBS at each one, we took part in street evangelism and passed out bags of groceries to people in need, and we put on the first-ever women's conference in Montrouis.
We crammed so much into this week-long trip and I love that I was with a team of people that are as adventurous as we are. We ended up taking a hike up an aqueduct to the top of a mountain, a boat ride to an island off the coast, we went snorkeling in the middle of the Haitian bay, we prayed over 5 voodoo compounds and over the voodoo mambas as well, we loved on numerous orphans, laid hands on women in need, provided medical care to the people in the village, we worshiped on the beach each night and shared Jesus with anyone who would listen.
I loved this trip because we were forced to follow Holy Spirits lead, our agenda became His agenda and everything worked out according to His plan, not ours, and isn't that just the way it's supposed to be?

Today, I want to share how I fortify my life through my home. While I definitely enjoy getting out of the house from time to time, I am absolutely a homebody at heart. I love curling up on the couch to watch a show or play video games with my family, working in the garden while my kids run around the yard, cooking meals from scratch with my husband, or hosting friends for a cozy get-together. Home, with my family, is where I feel the most comfortable and grounded.

Sometimes, things don’t go as planned—who am I kidding? Most of the time, things don’t go as planned. In my mind, I thought this journey would be easier. Shouldn’t my life be fortified by now? Yet, I keep running into roadblock after roadblock. We are only in the third month of the year, and already my family has been hit with a stomach bug, COVID, a sore throat virus, the flu, a cold, and now allergies are kicking back in. On top of that, my migraines, which I’ve suffered from for most of my life, are in full force.

In my previous blog, I talked about building the foundation for fortifying my life by strengthening my relationship with Jesus. Now that we've centered our lives around God, it's time to focus on mending our minds.
Mental health is so important—when you're not feeling good mentally, life can feel impossible. How can you take care of your family, work, keep up with your home, and manage everything else if you don’t prioritize your mental well-being?
As a mom, caring for myself—physically and mentally—often gets put on the back burner. Naturally, my kids will always come first. But the fact that I have three beautiful children relying on me makes it even more crucial that I take care of myself. I can’t be the best version of myself for them if I never do anything for myself.
