Port Elizabeth is situated in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. While known for its beautiful beaches and big game animals, it is also an area of great need. With an unemployment rate of almost 35% and an HIV prevalence rate of more than 26%, children abandoned without parental care is a huge problem. In many areas once a child is diagnosed with HIV, if they are not already an orphan, they are left to fend for themselves. Due to the stigma attached to abortion, there is a growing trend in South Africa for young women to abandon unwanted newborns. This trend has caused the number of orphans in South Africa to increase by over 30% in the past decade. Between true orphans and those orphaned through abandonment, the issue of homeless children in South Africa has become an epidemic. Fish Company jumped at the chance to build an orphanage for infants affected by HIV in this area. While our project has been fully funded, we are waiting on final approval for construction to begin.
